Experts reveal top hair trends for SS/14

“Australians are very in tune with what’s happening each season on the circuit. Social media is now becoming the quickest way to access these trends from all parts of the globe. Whether you are following celebrities, international stylists or brands themselves, this platform allows for instant viewing of the latest looks and the visual nature is what engages people to see these looks in real life.” says Goldwell hair stylist Joel Foreman.

The Style
John Frieda's Australia creative consultant, David Keogh says that we will be seeing a new hair trend begin to emerge this spring/summer.“We are still leaning towards the classic old Hollywood hair but definitely moving away from that Victoria's Secret hair. I think we are going to see more relaxed and beachy waves which are not so formed.”

We’re set to see styles that are fairly laid back and incorporate plenty of texture, volume and movement - requiring less maintenance to compliment our more laid back and casual summer lifestyle.

“For spring/summer, the best look is effortless chic - people want to look like they woke up that way. Natural and effortless, you want to be out and about enjoying summer, not over complicating your hair,” explains KEVIN.MURPHY founder Kevin Murphy. “This spring summer hair has to look lived in and ‘undone’. It has a subtle movement that isn’t forced. This is the very essence of cool and this texture can be incorporated into a low pony, an edgy disconnected bob or a romantic up-do.”

The Cut

Celebrities are having influence on the mid-length lob set to be a strong front-runner this spring/summer. “A new season calls for a fresh new look - from short to shoulder-length bobs that are tousled and wavy with a middle sweeping fringe. Recently, quite a few celebrities have gone for the classic chop with a rendition of the shoulder length bob,” says Schwarzkopf Professional’s Dario Cotroneo. “What I am loving this spring/summer is the chin length and slightly longer textured shattered bob that celebrities like Lara Bingle and Alyssa Milano are sporting,” contributes Keogh.

This season’s cut will be all about eye-glazing fringes with an undone texture teamed with disconnected layers to create a modern look.

The Colour
The last few years may have been all about balayage and ombre, but this year it has been replaced with a new style of highlights. “It’s all going to be about multi-tonal hair, but as opposed to traditional balayage, we’re going to see lots of what I call “blended free-lighting”, which gives off a look that resembles a variety of flickers and different colours throughout the hair,” explains Clairol Nice’n Easy ambassador and expert colourist Belinda Jeffrey. “Ombre is gone and forgotten. It’s now about block colours or subtle highlights and lowlights that work to make gorgeous, beautiful-looking hair.”
This season will see hair colour move away from brights into pastel colours. “I think the trend in dramatic hair colour has taken off of late. Now they are fading out and looking beautiful, people are requesting the more subtle pastel version,” reveals Murphy. While Ballard has noticed blue and lavender pastels, Fudge global head of technical training Tracy Hayes has seen other spectrums of the rainbow: “Pinks and purples are still on trend, however, in London we are seeing a really beautiful move towards pastel yellow and turquoise.”
When it comes to natural hues, the colour palette for spring/summer 2014/15 is made up of rich coppers and creamy honey blondes. “We are making a lean towards more honey and light auburn tones as well as soft caramels. I think this has been inspired by what we are seeing on the red carpet, e.g. Margo Robbie with that honey blonde,” says Keogh.

This was an interesting and rather enjoyable topic for me to research. Frankly, I'm quiet excited (and a little nervous) to see these messy, tousled and muti-colour hair styles emerge this summer!
